The Gospel of Thomas - Song of Solomon

Joining the Two Texts together in Marriage
Into One Joint-Body Chiasm

Together, let us join the two sides of these two texts together.
Join the Chiastic Structures of The Sayings of Jesus in The Gospel of Thomas
together with the Chiastic Structure of the sayings in The Song of Solomon.
Together they provide clues toward a deeper understanding, and a deeper meaning.

As seen below, the joining of these two texts is pictured as a marriage.
Following the pattern already established in the study of
"The Gospel of Christ Unveiled" these two manuscripts are brought together.
If the reader is unfamiliar with the Chiastic Marriage of sacred manuscripts
then a visit to this link may be helpful as it provides a helpful template
into which The Song of Solomon text is superimposed to create this page.

See these writings as a "body" of text.
The two sides of the chiasm are like the two sides of the human body.
Through the joining together of the many key words,
which are found within the text of these chiastic structures,
the body is created and joined together. This is an allusion to Christ as the head,
and his body, with the many members, all joined together in one.

Each saying is another bone in the skeletal structure.
Each part and each member is a message within themselves, being
"knit together... by joints and bands... having nourishment"
and increasing with the increase of God.

Joined together as One, being built up into a holy temple,
as each one does his part,
this body will have the very witness of Christ within
and will shine more and more until that final day.

This Gospel, and the joining of each saying, as if individual members of a body,
becomes an illustration of the knitting together of the church
that was itself built on this foundational message.

The are many phrases from the New Testament that illustrate or allude
to this knitting together, to this interconnectedness, and to this Onenness:
The Body of Christ, the New Creation, the Joint Body, the One Body,
The Mystery of Christ, and the Spiritual Body.

When connected together these sayings illustrate the perfectly joined and Perfected Man.
See The Perfect Man: The Spirit - Body.

Solomon can mean Peace or Two becoming One
Shulamite can mean Perfected One or Peaceable One
Make the Two One.

In Jewish communities the Song Solomon
is sometimes presented as depicting the Love of God for Israel.
In the Christian tradition, the Song of Solomon
is often seen as an illustration of the love between Christ and the Church.

As the two become one, this Song will be heard in the heavenlies on every level.
This is the greatest love story ever told:
Solomon and Shulamite, Bride and Bridegroom, Male and Female,
God and Israel, God and man, God and the Universe,
Christ and the Church, Jesus and his Disciples, and Heaven and Earth.

This Divine Marriage will be seen on every level of reality.
This marriage is honorable in all.

Most magnificently, for the purposes of this page,
the intercourse between King Solomon and the Girl in The Song of Solomon,
and the joining of the Song of Solomon with The Gospel of Thomas,
is seen as illustrating the intimacy and relationship between
Jesus and his disciples in The Gospel of Thomas.

This revelation of the divine marriage is foundational to understanding
the message of Jesus as it is presented within the Gospel of Thomas.
Jesus said,

"When you make the two one,
and when you make the inside (of the text) like the outside
and the outside (of the text) like the inside,
and the above like the below,
and when you make the male and the female one and the same,
so that the male not be male nor the female female;
and when you fashion eyes in the place of an eye,
and a hand in place of a hand,
and a foot in place of a foot,
and a likeness in place of a likeness;
then will you enter the kingdom."

(Thomas 22)

****************

Why is all this so important?
The underlying structure of these two texts is a visual illustration of the eternal and secret plan of the Father. Many ancient texts, including much of the New Testament, appear to use this Chiastic Structure: an ABCDCBA organizational pattern. The implications of the Chiastic structures within The Gospel of Thomas and The Song of Solomon are most astonishing.

These hidden structures within Thomas and The Song of Solomon suggest that an esoteric exegesis is intended by the author. Progressive deeper mysteries are gradually revealed in the joining together of these chiasmic structures. The implications of this necessary knitting together of the two into one Joint-Body to interpret the Gospel of Thomas and the Song of Solomon is astonishing beyond belief. This is especially true if Thomas is understood to be an early source document for the New Testament Gospels. Also, and just as profound, if this joint body structure in Thomas was used by Paul, Peter, John and the other New Testament writers as a teaching tool, then The New Testament may need to be reinterpreted in light of these new insights, and this divine marriage. If these possibilities are honestly examined, then the scope and repercussions of these hidden chiastic structures can become staggering. This manner of esoteric exegesis and the resulting interpretation may dramatically influence the understanding not only of Christ's words, but also of the Gospels, the letters of Paul, and the entire New Testament, and perhaps some of the Old Testament.

"Whoever finds the interpretation of these sayings will not experience death. Let him who seeks continue seeking until he finds. When he finds, he will become troubled. When he becomes troubled, he will be astonished, and he will rule over the All," Thomas 1-2.

The keys have been provided, and the door is opened, and the walls are removed. The interpretation and the riches hidden within are yours to discover.

The charts below are an attempt to present inner details of the "The Great Mystery" as revealed through Thomas and Solomon. There is a joining together seen in the Song of Solomon, and in the joining of these two texts, and within the bridal chamber illustrating the open giving and sharing of both Gnosis and Power.

In the bodily structure below ideas common to both texts are aligned. The first column and forth column demonstrate the chiastic structure of Gospel of Thomas... the original sayings of Jesus. The second and third columns are the chiastic structure of the Song of Solomon. Joining these two chiasms together creates a new Joint Body Chiasm. Make the two into One using key thoughts, words, and rhetoric. The Outer Female Chiastic Structure is joined with The Inner Male Chiastic Structure creating One New Perfect Man.

(For those unfamiliar with this process of exegesis, the Chart below is created by superimposing The Song of Solomon Chiasm into The Joint body Chiasm of Thomas. The the inner chiasm of Thomas is replaced with the chiasmic structure of The Song of Solomon. The chiastic Structure of the Song of Solomon was uncovered by aligning the Solomon text with the Thomas text. This can be seen in the The Gospel of Thomas - Song of Solomon Key Word Connections. The appropriately corresponding verses of The Song are then superimposed into the Inner Chiastic structure of Thomas. This newly discovered chiastic structure of Solomon is superimposed into The Joint body Chiasm of Thomas. For a further explanation of the creation, use, and benefit of chiastic structures within Thomas click here.)

The Inner Chiasm represented by The Song of Solomon relates to Gnosis or Knowledge of the Inner Mysteries. The Outer Chiastic structure of The Gospel of Thomas relates to the lesser mysteries. The Joining of the Two into One is The Great Mystery. Once these are joined together then deeper insights can be revealed.

In the chart below the outer female chiasm is color coded yellow.
The inner male chiasm is blue.
The bridal chamber, where male and female are perfectly joined together, is green.
The foot, hand, eye, and likeness references are color coded pink.
The bright light of transfiguration within the bridal chamber is color coded bright yellow, like the brightness of the sun.

Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; interpreting, comparing, and combining and joining together (perfectly joined) spiritual things with spiritual. 1 Corinthians 2:12-14, 1 Corinthians 2:13 ASV.

Revealing the message of Thomas and the Song the sayings are joined together. The above and the below, or the the top and the bottom of the Thomas scroll is folded together. The left and right of the Thomas text are then joined together.  Then the Song of Solomon, as the male text, is inserted within the female. The two structures are in like manner also joined together by key words.

Then the structural key words in Thomas 22 are fashioned together: eyes in the place of an eye, and a hand in place of a hand, and a foot in place of a foot, and a likeness in place of a likeness. Reminiscent of the Bridal Chamber the two chiasms pictorially suggest a marriage of the male and the female. The two come together as one. Sayings are aligned horizontally by the gentle rocking of the female upon the male structure within her. Viewed as a whole the chart is a picture of the two becoming One New Man.

For those with "an eye" to behold hidden and deeper spiritual reality, through the perfect joining and alignment within The Bridal Chamber, the bright light of illumination reveals the Perfect Man.

The entire structure is held together by key words. Within the chart below these key words are underlined, and in bold. Those sayings which align horizontally are combined together forming a complete teaching interpreting and providing context to the individual sayings.

Presented for the benefit of the All,
Not made perfect without you,

URfriend,
Dean Johnson

As they are able to be received, progressively deeper horizontally aligned teachings are revealed by the joining together of these chiasms.

An Introduction to the Chiastic Structure of The Song of Solomon

Below, starting at this point in the larger bodily structure, the Song of Solomon is introduced. The second and third columns are the chiastic structure of the Song of Solomon.  By recognizing the larger bodily structure, this inner chiasm could be thought of as the inner man where Christ dwells in you richly with all Wisdom.  Perhaps, Paul saw the Song of Solomon as a love story between Christ and this Wisdom.

Through marriage, just as the Shulamite is joined to Solomon, there is a sharing of knowledge and power.

This is the greatest love story ever told: Solomon and Shulamite. Bride and Bridegroom. Christ and Wisdom. Christ and the Church. Jesus and his Disciples.

Joined together this inner chiasm could be thought of as a male. The first column and the forth column demonstrate the outer chiastic structure of Gospel of Thomas which are the original sayings of Jesus. This outer chiasm could be thought of as the female of this larger Joint body Chiasm. Here we can see another marriage happening: the inner chiasm with the outer chiasm, and the male with the female. Perhaps, we could think of God and Israel, God and man, God and the Universe, and Heaven and Earth. This is the Divine Marriage - working itself out, step by step, on every level of reality.

All things are made new. If the inner chiasm is the inner man and the outer chiasm is the old man, then perhaps the joining together of the two could be thought of as The New Man - The Perfect Man.

The old is destroyed, then transformed, and a new man emerges. In the new bodily structure ideas common to both texts are aligned. Joining these two chiasms together creates a new Joint Body Chiasm. Make the two into one using the key thoughts, words, and rhetoric. The Outer Female Chiastic Structure is joined with The Inner Male Chiastic Structure creating One New Perfect Man.

The outer yellow chiasm chiasm can represent the female. The inner blue chiasm can represent the male. The joining of these these two chiasmic texts can represent the marriage of the male and the female. This joining of the male and the female can illustrate the marriage of Solomon and Shulamite, of God and Israel, of Christ and his disciples, and even of God and humanity.

Note: The Gospel of Matthew connects the idea of "light" with "city on a hill". "You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all [who are] in the house.” Matthew 5:14-15. Thomas places these two (city and light) together in saying 32 and 33.

(33) Jesus said, "Preach from your housetops that which you will hear in your ear. For no one lights a lamp and puts it under a bushel, nor does he put it in a hidden place, but rather he sets it on a lampstand so that everyone who enters and leaves will see its light."
This Key Horizontal Saying grouping connects the Bridal Chamber with Light. There is a bright light in the bridal Chamber at the marriage when two become One.

(c.f. Thomas 33)

[3:10b] the bottom thereof

(See the Green Box below - 104)

(c.f. Thomas 73-75)

[6:8b] and fourscore concubines, and virgins without number. [9] My dove, my undefiled is but one; she is the only one of her mother, she is the choice one of her that bare her.
The daughters saw her, and blessed her; yea, the queens and the concubines,

Notice that this Key Horizontal Saying grouping connects the Bridal Chamber with a bright Light.

The Coptic scribe of Thomas draws attention to this vital grouping with the addition of the phrase "split open."

(See also 30,77-80)

(77) Jesus said, "It is I who am the light which is above them all. It is I who am the all. From me did the all
