Many
ancient texts, including much of the New Testament, appear to have a
Chiastic Structure: an ABCDCBA organizational pattern.
The implications of the Chiastic structures within The Gospel
of Thomas are astonishing.
The
chart below
reveals the left and the right of two essential
chiastic structures in Thomas.
Although
there is only One gospel, in the gospel of Christ, there are two
separate chiasmic gospel messages for two separate groups of people.
There is a gospel to the uncircumcision. There is a gospel to the
circumcision. This is reminiscent of Paul’s comment in Galatians “that
the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me, as the gospel
of the circumcision was unto Peter,” (Galatians 2:7.)
These
two groups, male and female, are joined together in holy matrimony into
one body, the new man.
In
the Thomas text there
is a male structure and a female structure. Sayings common to both
structures are aligned so that the first column is virtually identical
to the second column for much of the Joint Body Chiasm. Making the two
into one
using key words, The
Outer Female Chiastic Structure
is joined with The
Inner Male Chiastic Structure creating
One
New Perfect Man
(For
a
introductory explanation of the creation, use and benefit
of chiastic structures within Thomas click
here.)
In
the chart below the
outer female chiasm is color coded yellow.
The
inner male chiasm is blue.
The
bridal
chamber, where male and female
are perfectly joined
together, is green.
The
foot, hand, eye, and likeness references are color coded pink.
The bright light of transfiguration
within the bridal chamber is color coded bright yellow, like the
brightness of the sun.
Now
we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is
of God; that we might
know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also
we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the
Holy Ghost teacheth; interpreting, comparing,
and combining and joining together (perfectly joined)
spiritual things with spiritual. 1
Corinthians 2:12-14, 1 Corinthians 2:13 ASV.
Revealing
the message of Thomas the sayings are joined together. The
above and the below, or the
the top and the bottom of the Thomas scroll is
folded together. The left and right of the Thomas
text is
then joined
together
by similar key words creating the male and female chiastic structures.
Then the
male is inserted within the female. The two structures
are in like manner also joined
together by key words.
Then the
structural key
words in Thomas
22 are
fashioned
together:
eyes in the place of an eye, and
a hand in place of a hand, and
a foot in place of a foot, and
a likeness in place of a likeness. Reminiscent
of the Bridal Chamber the two chiasms pictorially
suggest a marriage
of the male and the female. The
two come
together as one. Sayings
are are
aligned
horizontally by
the gentle rocking of the female upon the male structure
within her. Viewed
as a whole the chart is a picture of the two becoming
One New Man.
For
those with "an
eye" to behold hidden and deeper spiritual reality,
through the
perfect joining and alignment within The Bridal Chamber, the
bright light of illumination
reveals the Perfect
Man.
The
entire structure is held
together by key words. Within
the chart below
these key words are
underlined, and in bold, with notes in the left
column. Those
sayings which align horizontally are combined
together forming
a complete
teaching interpreting
and providing context to the
individual sayings
.
These
hidden structures within Thomas suggest that an esoteric exegesis
is intended by the author. Progressive deeper
mysteries are gradually revealed in the joining
together of these chiasmic structures. The implications of this
necessary knitting together
of the two into one Joint-Body
to interpret
the Gospel of Thomas is astonishing beyond belief. This is especially
true if
Thomas is understood to be an early source
document
for the New Testament Gospels.
Also, and just as profound, if this joint body structure in
Thomas was
used by Paul as a teaching tool in certain congregations he
wrote to,
or if as it appears, it is the foundation behind his
theology,
then his letters may need to be reinterpreted. If these
possibilities are
honestly examined then the scope and repercussions of these
hidden
chiastic structures can become staggering. This manner of esoteric exegesis
and the resulting interpretation may dramatically influence the
understanding
not only of Christ's words, but also of the Gospels, the letters of
Paul, and
the entire New Testament.
Jesus
said, “The pharisees and the
scribes have taken the
keys of knowledge (gnosis) and hidden them.
They themselves have not entered, nor have they allowed to enter those
who wish
to,” (Thomas 39).
"Whoever
finds the interpretation of these sayings will not experience death. Let
him who seeks continue seeking until he finds. When he finds, he
will become troubled. When
he becomes troubled, he will be astonished, and he will rule over
the All," Thomas 1-2.
The keys
have been provided, and the door is opened, and the walls are removed.
The interpretation and the
riches hidden within are yours to
discover.
